Bikram Yoga facilitates the recovery and rejuvenation of the human body, helps to cure chronic diseases and various injuries. On the physical level yoga expands flexibility, strength and balance. On the mental level it encourages raising self-confidence, develops self-control, improves concentration skills, evolves determination and assists in stress management.

Bikram Yoga is a specially developed series of 26 hatha yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises. It is practiced in a room heated to + 40.6°C and run exactly 90 minutes. The sequence of postures always remains the same in order to ensure a systematic workout of every part of the body. The hot and humid air warms up one’s body, so greater flexibility is attained, it is easier to perform stretching and the risk of getting injured is considerably eliminated. Profuse sweating helps to clean the body of toxins.

According to scientific research most people only use up to 50 percent of their lung capacity. Bikram Yoga can stretch the lungs in order to withstand holding more oxygen. Through regular practice of pranayama deep breathing the student will eventually be able to enhance oxygen conversion and absorption, and improve blood circulation as in many other forms of cardiovascular activity. Bikram Yoga has successfully helped to heal various types of injuries and to get rid of chronic back pain and joint pains.

Who is Bikram?

Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the world-famous Yoga College of India and the developer of Bikram Yoga. He was born in Calcutta in 1946 and began doing yoga at the age of 4 with his guru Bishnu Ghosh. Bishnu Ghosh is the brother of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi.

At the age of 13, Bikram won the National India Yoga Championship and remained undefeated for three years. At 17, after an injury to his knee while weightlifting, doctors predicted that he would never walk again. Refusing to accept this, Bikram returned to his guru, and after six months of intense yoga therapy was healed.

Bikram founded the Yoga College of India in Beverly Hills, California in 1974. Since then he has successfully brought better health and healing to millions of people and has certified hundreds of people to teach this series of yoga.
